The Bureau for Economic Research Programme offers hands-on training to suitably qualified individuals who have been previously disadvantaged. This program is designed to prepare trainees for roles as economists in either the private or public sector.

The one-year program provides candidates with the opportunity to collaborate with BER economists, gaining hands-on experience in all facets of business-oriented economic analysis. Since its establishment in 2006, the program has successfully trained numerous economists who have gone on to pursue careers at prominent financial institutions, the South African Reserve Bank, the National Treasury, and other esteemed research institutes.
Requirements for participation in the program include:
- Being a South African citizen
- Holding an Honors or Master’s degree in Economics (by January 2023), with a focus on macroeconomics at the postgraduate level
- Fluency in English
- Possessing excellent communication and writing skills
