Program Overview: Getty Scholar Grants are aimed at established scholars or individuals who have achieved distinction in their fields. Recipients reside at the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa, where they pursue their own projects without work-related obligations, utilize Getty collections, engage in weekly meetings on an annual research theme or the African American Art History Initiative, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.

Eligibility for Getty Foundation:

Researchers of all nationalities working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences are welcome to apply. Applicants who obtained their degree after September 1, 2020, should apply for a postdoctoral fellowship. Current Getty staff and their immediate family members are ineligible. Recent recipients who received a Getty Scholar award within the past three years may be excluded from consideration.

Terms: Getty Foundation Scholars may be in residence for three to nine months. Stipends vary based on the duration of the residency, ranging from $21,500 for a three-month residency to $65,000 for a nine-month residency. AAAHI Fellowships are limited to nine-month terms with a stipend of $65,000.

Application Availability and Deadline: Complete application materials are accepted online only. The deadline for submission is 5:00 p.m. (PT) on October 1, 2024.

Notification: Applicants are notified of the Getty Research Institute’s decision approximately six months following the deadline.

Review Process: Getty Scholar Grants are awarded competitively based on the overall quality of the application, relevance to the annual research theme, applicant’s achievements, and project’s benefit from Getty resources.

How to Apply: Applicants must complete and submit the online Getty Scholar grant application form along with required attachments, including a project proposal, curriculum vitae, and optional writing sample.
