REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a South African citizen or a citizen from any country in Africa.
- Postgraduate students enrolled at South African universities or tertiary institutions.
- Age between 19 and 29 years old (must be under 30 at the commencement of the scholarship).
- Possession of a first degree or equivalent, or in the process of completing one by January 2023.
- Above-average academic records required.
- Intent to pursue a postgraduate qualification (Honours degree or Masters degree only).
- Must study at a recognized institution of higher education in South Africa.
- Attendance at all compulsory elements of MRF’s leadership development program, scheduled on weekdays or weekends.
- Demonstration of potential to embody the MRF’s founding principles (education, leadership, entrepreneurship, reconciliation).
- SAQA verification of qualifications required if shortlisted (not needed for the initial scholarship application; check qualification status at www.saqa.org.za).
BURSARY COVERAGE:
- Tuition and registration fees as set by the institution.
- Study materials allowance.
- Accommodation, meal allowances, and medical aid allowance determined by the MRF.
- Economy-class travel allowance for international scholars (covering the fare from the scholar’s home to their institution at the beginning and end of their degree).
- Personal allowance determined by the MRF.
HOW TO APPLY
All applicants who meet the eligibility criteria must apply online at www.mandelarhodes.org/scholarship/apply.
Submit a clear copy of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form:
- Certified copy of your ID document
- Certified copy of your passport if you are not a South African citizen
- Certified copy of your Degree certificate
- Transcripts detailing your academic results
- Details outlining your proposed course of study (while a university application is not mandatory, it is advisable to apply to more than one university as soon as possible)
- Three (3) recommendation letters from individuals familiar with your character (recommendations must be submitted via the application platform before you can complete your full application)
- Two (2) short essays – one about your personal journey and another addressing a specific question related to MRF principles.
