University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program Fellowship for Faculty from African Universities 2024/2025

The University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars Program Fellowship for Faculty from African Universities for the 2024/2025 academic year is now open for applications, with a deadline of October 15th, 2024.

Program Overview: The UMAPS program hosts two cohorts per year, from August through December and January through May. However, there is only one application round for both cohorts. While applicants can express their preference for a specific cohort during the application process, placement in a particular cohort upon acceptance is not guaranteed.

Eligibility Requirements for the University of Michigan Presidential Scholars Program:

  • Previous recipients of the UMAPS fellowship are not eligible to reapply. Preference will be given to applicants with limited international experience outside the African continent.
  • Applicants must be early-career faculty members who have taught in the higher education system for less than ten years and are currently teaching in a college or university in Africa.
  • Applicants must demonstrate support from their home institution, including a letter of recommendation from the head of department, dean, or vice chancellor.
  • Selected applicants must be able to remain in residence at the University of Michigan for five months.

Nomination Process:

  • Nomination is required for applicants from countries outside Ghana, South Africa, or Kenya. The nomination must be completed by a U-M faculty member familiar with the applicant’s work.
  • Nominating faculty members must complete the online nomination form and submit/upload a letter of endorsement indicating their willingness to serve as a mentor during the residency and provide office space if possible.

  • Admitted scholars will receive five months of residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with access to university resources.
  • The program covers round-trip airfare from the scholar’s home country to Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as free housing, medical insurance, a research allowance, and a modest stipend for living expenses.
  • Scholars will also have access to office/laboratory space and the opportunity to present their research to the U-M community.

  • All applicants must complete the online application form, upload a curriculum vitae, and submit a scholarly program/research proposal not exceeding five pages.
  • Applications must also provide the contact information of the department head, dean, or vice chancellor at the applicant’s home institution who will be writing their letter of support.
  • Applications will be reviewed after the closing date on October 15th, 2024. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Only applications submitted through the online system will be reviewed.
