Job Descriptions for UJ
The University of Johannesburg is actively seeking a Lecturer for the Department of Public Law.
The Department of Public Law is a dynamic academic unit that delivers a range of modules to law students across the faculty. Presently, these modules are offered on the Kingsway Campus and cover diverse subjects such as Introduction to Legal Studies, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, International Law, Social Security Law, and Labour Law.
The ideal candidate will possess proven expertise in instructing first-year law students, as this forms the core of their teaching responsibilities. However, they may also be called upon to teach other modules within the LLB or LLM curricula.
In terms of research, the successful candidate must specialize in a field related to public law. Additionally, flexibility is essential, as the candidate will be expected to travel and teach on any of the university’s campuses as required by the department.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, manage, and design study materials for modules in the Department of Public Law, with a primary emphasis on first-year modules.
- Supervise postgraduate students.
- Actively engage in research, publications, academic development, and community service.
- Adhere to administrative duties within the faculty and department.
- Pursue an LLD degree if not already in possession, within a reasonable timeframe.
- Demonstrate commitment to self-development through excellence in teaching, research, community engagement, and academic leadership.
- Possible teaching assignments on any of the university’s campuses.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Head of Department.
- Administer the tutorship system.
Minimum Requirements for the UJ:
- Possession of an LLM degree (NQF level 9) in a related field.
- Proven track record of teaching law subjects to students and research with a focus on public law.
- Accredited research output.
- Expertise in relevant teaching approaches and methods, including online environments.
Recommendations:
- Knowledge of university and faculty policies, rules, and regulations.
- Successful postgraduate supervision record.
- Peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals.
- Potential requirement for shortlisted candidates to present to the faculty and stakeholders on a designated topic.
